Creative Rest: Why We're Painting Together This August

Women wake up and move into critical thinking. All day. You manage staff, balance spreadsheets, navigate the wage gap while doing the same job as your male colleague for less pay. You hold multiple angles in your mind simultaneously: the project deadline, the team dynamic, the meeting you have to lead, the personal life waiting at home. You adapt. You pivot. You think.

And by the end of the day, your brain is exhausted in a way that sleep alone can't fix.

We know this exhaustion is real. We know the demand is constant. And yes, you need rest. But what most do not articulate is that there are seven different types of rest, and you likely need more than one.

THE SEVEN TYPES OF REST

According to research on workplace wellness, rest isn't one-size-fits-all. There's:

  • Mental Rest: giving your critical thinking brain a break

  • Physical Rest: sleep, movement, body restoration

  • Emotional Rest: space to feel without performing

  • Spiritual Rest: connection to what matters

  • Social Rest: presence with your people

  • Sensory Rest: quieting the noise and overwhelm

  • Creative Rest: restoring the part of you that makes, imagines, and builds

Most of us are only addressing one or two. That's why you can sleep eight hours and still feel depleted.

CREATIVE REST IS NOT OPTIONAL

If your job requires creativity, critical thinking, brainstorming, or problem-solving, you need creative rest. Your brain has been in output mode all day. It's been producing, solving, adapting, creating solutions for other people's problems.

Creative rest isn't about doing more creative projects. It's about doing creative activities purely for the joy of it, not for profit, not for performance, not to prove anything.

According to the American Psychological Association, creative rest means:

  • Engaging in creative hobbies for fun: whether that's knitting, writing, baking, painting, gardening, or anything that lets your hands lead while your thinking brain steps back.

  • Participating in activities that inspire awe and wonder: visiting an art museum, sitting by the ocean, watching a sunset, experiencing beauty for beauty's sake.

The point? Your creative reserves need to be actively restored.

Most high-achieving women have been running on empty creative reserves for years. We've turned our creativity into productivity. We've made our imagination serve our ambition. We've forgotten that creating something simply because it's beautiful is a form of medicine.

FROLICK CREATIVELY WITH BCC

In July, we gathered for Late Night Brunch, a hilarious evening of social rest, where laughter became permission, and community became medicine. We remembered what it feels like to be truly with good people, to play without agenda, to enjoy breakfast after dark (the way it should be), and to frolick without apology.

This August, we're deepening the work.

Sip & Paint is designed specifically to offer you creative rest, but with intention, community, and witness.

This isn't about painting well. Believe it or not, your nervous system doesn't care about skill. It cares about presence. Your presence. This guided experience is about landing on your word, your affirmation, and the truth about who you're becoming. Before a single brushstroke is made, you'll move through reflection questions that help you identify what you need to embody. Then your hands take over.

Using sticker lettering, texture paste, and layered painting techniques, you build a dimensional canvas that becomes an extension of your intention. You're not thinking. You're creating. You're not producing. You're being.

And the most radical part? You do this held in community. Other women are creating their own words, their own intentions, their own pieces. You're not alone in your reflection. You're not isolated in your creation. You're part of a collective act of creative restoration.

Come for the creative rest. Stay for the community. Leave with a handcrafted piece that reminds you who you're becoming.

Ready to go deeper?  Our Embodied Sovereignty: Permission to Rest series begins in September, guiding you through seven types of rest across seven months.
