The Truth About The Ambition Gap

For the first time, McKinsey's 2025 Women in the Workplace study reveals a troubling ambition gap: women are less interested in being promoted than men. But before we name, blame or shame women for "leaning out," let's examine what's actually happening—including what most workplace studies refuse to acknowledge.

Women aren't less ambitious—they're less supported, and their health barriers are increasing becoming more invisible.

The data is clear. When women receive the same career support as men, the ambition gap disappears completely. Yet women at every level receive less sponsorship, less manager advocacy, and fewer opportunities to advance. Entry-level women stand out for receiving far less sponsorship than any other group—and even when they do have sponsors, they're promoted at lower rates than men.

But here's what the McKinsey study doesn't capture: the health transitions that disproportionately impact women's work performance.

But here's what the McKinsey study doesn't capture: the health transitions that disproportionately impact women's work performance. Women navigating perimenopause and menopause—which typically occurs between ages 45-55, right when many reach senior leadership—experience brain fog, insomnia, chronic pain, and urinary issues that directly affect workplace performance. Yet workplace wellness programs rarely address these symptoms, benefits plans are scaling back access to care, and this is costing the U.S. economy an estimated billions annually in lost working time.

Women aren't questioning their competence. They're questioning whether advancement is possible in systems that consistently overlook them—and their bodies.

As we approach National Women's Health Week, we're addressing the health barriers women face.

On May 4, 2026, join the Butterfly Conservatory Collective for a fireside chat with Dr. Shenelle Wilson, Urologist and Founder of Metro Atlanta Urology and the Orgasmic Clinic, about perimenopause, sexual wellness, and pelvic health—because sustainable leadership requires sustainable women's health.
