By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail. - Benjamin Franklin
National Preparedness Month, observed every September, underscores the importance of preparing for emergencies. Due to climate change, natural disasters, such as storms, floods, droughts, wildfires, hail, extreme heat, earthquakes, and other emergencies, can strike unexpectedly, impacting your business directly or inadvertently and at unimaginable levels.
In 2023, the United States of America amassed $1B in disaster costs. In July 2024, West Texas experienced over 100 earthquakes linked to local oil fields, damaging residences and business infrastructure. Telecom companies such as AT&T have experienced tech outages. Outside of a natural disaster in July 2024, a global technology outage left many without internet access. We are still learning and experiencing the impacts of COVID-19 on the workplace as it relates to wages, work schedules, workload, mental health, and relationships.

Food for Thought
How aware and prepared are you for critical business impacts?
Do you have a planning team or consultant?
What resources have you considered?
How have you prepared your operations and workforce?
Human Resources (HR) is crucial in coordinating efforts to ensure business continuity and employee safety. Below are seven actions HR can take to assist your organization to prepare for and respond to disasters:
Assess Hazards, Identify Needs
Identify natural hazards that pose risks to your business. Ensure there are plans for emergency alerts, transportation for evacuation, and considerations for employees with special needs.
Develop Contingency Plans
Create detailed plans for maintaining operations during emergencies. This includes backup systems for critical functions and clear communication strategies.
Provide Training
Conduct regular training sessions for employees on emergency procedures. This ensures everyone knows what to do and reduces panic during actual events.
Enhance Communication
Maintain open lines of communication with employees. Use multiple channels to disseminate information and updates during emergencies.
Support Mental Health
Offer resources and support for employees' mental health during and after emergencies. This includes access to Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) and counseling services.
Review Insurance Policies
Ensure your insurance policies cover potential disasters and that employees are informed about the coverage and claims process.
Foster a Culture of Safety & Belonging
Promote a culture of safety and belonging within the organization. Encourage employees to participate in regular safety drills, provide feedback on emergency preparedness plans, and identify ways colleagues can check on one another.
